A pregnant woman who is HIV-positive can pass the virus on to her baby in the womb, during childbirth, or, once the baby is born, through breastfeeding. In the absence of any intervention, the risk of mother-to-child-transmission (MTCT) is as high as 30-45% with prolonged breastfeeding

Mother to child transmission is the second most common form of HIV transmission in Malawi where only 2.3% of HIV positive pregnant women have access to Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission treatment. The cost of providing this treatment is just €175 per pregnant mother.
